TLDR, Summary
- Tyler said he felt good early but lost timing and command in the 5th and 6th innings, leading to difficulty throwing strikes and finishing the inning.
- He credited his recent success to maintaining his mechanics, sequencing better, and trusting his overall pitch mix, though today’s issues came from getting too aggressive and “flying open.”
- He added that pitch performance can vary day to day, but having a reliable four-seam fastball and repeatable mechanics makes mixing pitches much easier.
Kirsten: Tyler, when you look at this outing, it seemed like they were times. When you were incredibly efficient obviously there were a couple of walks so pitch count was kind of here and there, how did you find just navigating through today getting into the sixth but unable just to close out that sixth inning?
Tyler: Yeah it was definitely a challenge today. I think early on felt good, like third and fourth inning felt great, and then the fifth and sixth, I just, it was super weird. There's lost timing, flying open.
It was just one of those days where it was hard to throw strikes.
Kirsten: When you look at that, and obviously you put so much work into being able to give back after that I mean, it's just a takeaway at least from that, or learning or getting yourself back on track from how you close this one out?
Tyler: Like you're saying, like after today
Kirsten: Yeah, just considering how much work you put into doing that from last year.
Tyler: Yeah, I think just like easy fixes, I think I was just flying open too soon getting like really aggressive with my front side, so it's just more about like staying patient, staying enclosed.
Just one of those things today, in the moment, it was just hard to fix in the moment.
Reporter: Five of your six starts to start the season have been quality. When you look at that kind of in totality anything that stands out to you about any arsenal change or pitch changes
has led to that success?
Tyler: I think just keeping the the throw, what it is and kind of having a being in a good spot last year bringing them to this year, mixing it up a little bit more, but I think just kind of going out there and throwing it feels good and sequencing a little bit better, but I think for the most part it's just like the throw itself.
Reporter: This has been your best start at home? Is there a difference between pitching on and off the road or does it not really matter?
Tyler: I think it's just random. I just think, yeah. Doesn’t really matter.
Reporter: Did you feel the sinker, just maybe using it more the last few starts?
Tyler: I think it's just kind of in the moment what feels good. if I'm like ripping off of a four seam it seems to be the only thing if I'm late that I can kind of get back in the zone. I think today they both felt the same. I just think it was just a matter of who was hitting and throwing just kind of like an equal amount. But I do think like if I don't have the fourseam going it's just nice to have that as a second option.
Reporter: When you do have the trust and the repeatability of the throw, how much easier is it to vary between your pitch mix each start?
Tyler: A lot easier. I think for the most part like good timing is the same on all pitches and I think just being able to stay close, stay on target longer has been helpful. So I think it does affect the moment, for sure. Thanks, guys.
